Objective evaluation with standardized tool is used to establish a person’s level of competency in a given task. Candidates can be consistently evaluated on a wide range of clinical competencies according to their accuracy, objectiveness, and reproducibility. In contrast to a normal clinical exam, the OSCE may evaluate important aspects of Nurse’s efficacy, such as communication skills, patient safety, infection control practices and the ability to handle unexpected patient behaviour / events.
In order to prepare for the OSCE test, candidates will be able to learn topics relevant to nursing care and evaluate their existing nursing knowledge through ongoing assessment reviews.

Nurses planning to work in Irish health care system have to be registered with NMBI (Nursing Midwifery Board Ireland). The primary requirement of registration is to pass RCSI aptitude test, this examination tests both theoretical knowledge and practical skill.
The theory exam is a supervised online assessment consisting of 150 MCQ. Each Candidate have 3 hours to complete the exam and a minimum of 50% must be achieved in order to get pass. For the practical exam there will be a number of stations set up in the exam hall each covering a different clinical competency pertaining to that of a registered General nurse. A minimum of 14 stations up to 20 stations must be completed. Candidate have 10 minutes to complete the task in each station before proceeding to the next one.
Our aptitude training programme consist of both theory and skill training following RCSI guidelines and adhering to NMBI standards. Clear guidance for scenario based practical module will be provided in our simulation lab meeting European standards, communication support will be given throughout the training programme. On completion of the training nurses will be able to practice key clinical skills in their profession and implement holistic patient centred nursing care meeting Irish standards.

The OSCE training is designed to evaluate professionals to competently apply their professional nursing skills and knowledge in the UK. This examination tests their capability of applying knowledge to the care of patients at the level expected of a newly registered nurse.
During the training, nurses will be taught how to apply holistic patient-centred nursing care and implement key clinical skills in their profession. All the scenarios and associated questions in this examination correlate to current best practice and candidates are expected to answer them in relation to published evidence and not according to local arrangements.
Communication is central to nursing practice and will be assessed continually during the OSCE.
